Episode 29: Navigating Your Child’s Diagnosis with Grief, Hope, and Compassion
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode, I want to create space for feelings that often go unspoken. When your child receives a diagnosis, we often expect to feel relief because we finally have answers. But what many parents don't talk about is that relief can exist alongside grief, fear, guilt, confusion, and hope, all at the same time. A diagnosis doesn't change who your child is, but it can change how you understand them, support them, and advocate for them. Most importantly, it can open the door to deeper compassion, stronger connection, and a path forward that feels more aligned with your child's unique needs.
In this episode, I discuss:
- Why grief after a diagnosis doesn't mean you love or accept your child any less
- How to navigate feelings of guilt and use self-compassion to move forward
- Why slowing down can be more supportive than rushing into “fixing” mode
- How a diagnosis can shift us from frustration and judgment into greater curiosity and understanding
- The impact comparison can have on your parenting journey and how to stay connected to your child's unique path
- How to support your child through conversations that reduce shame and build confidence and self-understanding
Whether you're in the middle of an assessment process, have recently received answers, or are supporting a child with additional needs, I want you to know that every feeling you have is welcome here. If this episode spoke to you, please leave a like and share it with another parent who may be navigating a similar journey.
